U.S. Vice President JD Vance has responded sharply to criticism from Pope Leo XIV over the ongoing conflict involving Iran, urging the pontiff to be more cautious in his public statements.
Speaking on Tuesday, Vance who is Catholic said that while he respects the pope and welcomes his engagement in global issues, he disagrees with the substance of his comments. He argued that the pope’s position was not grounded in what he considers sound theological interpretation.
The disagreement stems from remarks made by the pope in a recent social media post, where he emphasized that God does not endorse war. He added that followers of Christ, described as the “Prince of Peace,” should not support those who wage violence, whether through traditional weapons or modern warfare.
Vance’s response highlights a growing tension between political leadership and religious voices over moral perspectives on international conflicts.
