Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi attended the launch of Seyi Makinde’s presidential campaign office in Abuja on Monday as political activities ahead of the 2027 election gather momentum.
Peter Obi attends Makinde campaign events at a time of growing realignments among opposition politicians and the emergence of new presidential contenders ahead of the next general election.
The campaign office, located in Wuse II, Abuja, is expected to serve as the national coordination centre for the presidential campaign of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and his running mate, Lawan Daura, under the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
APM begins nationwide campaign preparations
The launch marked a fresh step in the APM’s preparations for the 2027 presidential contest, with party officials, supporters and political stakeholders attending the event.
The party has said the campaign will focus on security, economic development, accountability and improved public welfare.
Makinde, who is serving his second term as Oyo State governor, has positioned his presidential bid as a platform for what he describes as a reset of Nigeria through practical reforms and improved governance.
He secured the APM presidential ticket in May following the party’s nomination process in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Bala Mohammed backs Makinde
Bauchi State Governor and APM national leader Bala Mohammed was among the prominent political figures at the campaign office launch.
Mohammed urged political opponents not to underestimate Makinde or the APM ahead of the 2027 election.
He described Makinde as an experienced administrator and mobiliser, while pointing to his record as governor of Oyo State.
“Whoever disregards us is at his own peril, we are here to reset Nigeria and we are bringing in one of the best human capitals that Nigeria has ever produced at the sub-national and national level, that is Makinde,” Mohammed said.
The Bauchi governor also praised Makinde’s background as an engineer and his management of public resources, arguing that his experience in Oyo State had prepared him for national leadership.

Obi’s appearance draws attention
The presence of Peter Obi at the event adds significance to the gathering, coming amid ongoing political movements and realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics.
His attendance at the Makinde campaign office launch, however, does not by itself establish any formal political alliance between the two politicians.
Makinde targets 2027 presidency
Makinde has presented his presidential ambition as a national project and said his goal is to restore hope and rebuild confidence in the country.
The governor has also argued that Nigeria needs a different approach to governance, particularly in security, the economy and public welfare.
His campaign is expected to rely heavily on the “Reset Nigeria” message as the APM seeks to present him as an alternative to President Bola Tinubu and other contenders in the 2027 presidential race.
Makinde will leave office as Oyo governor in 2027 after completing the constitutionally permitted two terms.
The APM has completed its presidential ticket with Lawan Daura as Makinde’s running mate, giving the party a North-South combination as it seeks to build support across the country.
With several political parties already positioning themselves for the 2027 contest, the launch of Makinde’s campaign office signals another phase in the preparations for what is shaping up to be a competitive presidential election.
