The Federal Government has rejected claims circulating on social media that Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) supported the recent failed coup attempt in Niger Republic.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, described the allegations as baseless and irresponsible, accusing those behind them of attempting to mislead the public and damage Nigeria’s reputation.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Enikanolaiye said Nigeria had never supported, and would not support, military coups or any other form of unconstitutional change of government.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democracy, constitutional order and stability across West Africa, the Sahel and the African continent.
The minister said Nigeria’s position on the situation in Niger had already been outlined in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 30, 2026.
According to him, the Nigerian government expressed concern over developments in Niger and called for a peaceful, inclusive and participatory process towards restoring stability and constitutional order in the country.
Enikanolaiye noted that Nigeria’s close historical, cultural and fraternal ties with Niger made peace and stability in the neighbouring country important to Nigeria.
He said Nigeria wanted to see democracy, security and development strengthened in Niger and across the wider Sahel region.
“Nigeria will never support illegality or unconstitutional change of government anywhere, no matter who is involved or which country is concerned,” the minister said.
He acknowledged Nigeria’s membership of ECOWAS but rejected suggestions that the country endorsed or condoned military rule in Niger.
The minister also urged Nigerians at home and abroad to disregard videos and narratives circulating online which he said were intended to create confusion and mislead the public.
Enikanolaiye further reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the African Union’s policy of rejecting unconstitutional changes of government.
He said Nigeria would continue working with ECOWAS, the African Union and the international community to defend democratic governance, uphold the rule of law and promote peace and stability in the region.
The Federal Government’s latest statement comes amid renewed attention on political developments in Niger and allegations circulating online about Nigeria’s alleged role in the failed coup attempt.
