Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has revealed that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will prioritise a consensus approach in selecting its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, with primary elections as a fallback if an agreement cannot be reached.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE TV, Atiku stated that unity within the party remains the preferred path, but made it clear that he is open to stepping aside if another candidate emerges through either consensus or a competitive primary process. He also pledged full support for whoever eventually secures the party’s ticket.

In a notable declaration, Atiku confirmed that the 2027 election will mark the end of his long-standing political ambitions, insisting it would be his final attempt at the presidency.

He acknowledged that persuading Nigerians to support his candidacy again would be a key challenge, especially amid criticisms that he represents an older political generation. However, he defended his relevance, arguing that experience remains essential in governance. Drawing from his time serving under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he emphasized the value of mentorship and practical exposure in leadership development.

Atiku also addressed the role of younger leaders, suggesting that their performance so far has not fully met public expectations, and stressed that experience is necessary for effective governance.

On the current administration, he was openly critical of President Bola Tinubu, describing his leadership as disappointing and raising concerns about the weakening of democratic institutions and the concentration of power.

The former vice president further disclosed that he is spearheading a broad political coalition ahead of the 2027 elections. According to him, the alliance includes members from multiple parties, including the APC, PDP, NNPP, and Labour Party, reflecting what he believes is the most viable strategy for electoral success in Nigeria.

Reaffirming his political strength in the North, Atiku also advocated constitutional reforms, particularly the formal inclusion of zoning to ensure equitable power rotation across regions.

He concluded by stating that the future of Nigeria’s leadership ultimately lies with the next generation, as he prepares for what he describes as his final political contest.
