The Minister-designate for the power sector, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has dismissed reports claiming he promised to resolve Nigeria’s electricity grid problems within three months.
In a statement released on Friday by his spokesperson, Adeola A. Adelabu, the reports were described as inaccurate and a distortion of comments made during Tegbe’s Senate screening on May 6, 2026.
According to the statement, Tegbe never gave a definite timeline for fixing the national grid, stressing instead that timelines would depend on technical assessments and consultations with key stakeholders in the power sector.
He explained that while immediate efforts to stabilize the grid would begin within his first 100 days in office, deeper reforms involving sector credibility, gas supply, and metering infrastructure could take up to one year to achieve.
Tegbe assured lawmakers and Nigerians that visible progress would be made under his leadership, promising improvements across the electricity value chain.
He also pledged to strengthen the national grid, upgrade critical infrastructure, improve commercial operations, and ensure greater accountability within the sector.
Speaking on electricity tariff reforms, the minister-designate said the government would prioritize the protection of vulnerable Nigerians while also maintaining sustainability and investor confidence in the industry.
The statement further noted that Tegbe remains open to engaging with the media and encouraged journalists to seek clarification when necessary to avoid misinformation about ongoing reforms in the power sector.
It added that the minister-designate is committed to transparency, effective implementation, and measurable results in tackling Nigeria’s electricity challenges.
