The APC Presidential Campaign Council has challenged former Anambra State governor Peter Obi over his record in office, particularly claims surrounding the state’s finances and borrowing during his tenure.
In a statement signed by its spokesman, Dele Alake, on September 21, 2026, the council said recent disclosures by the Anambra State Government had raised questions about Obi’s claims that he left the state without a debt burden.
The Peter Obi Anambra record has become a fresh point of political debate after the state government reportedly said the former governor’s administration spent about $4.05 billion, estimated at N5.4 trillion, during his eight years in office.
According to the APC campaign council, the state government also disclosed that Obi’s administration obtained $123.77 million in external loans.
Anambra loans and outstanding liabilities
The council said the state government identified eight external borrowings that were in place when Obi left office on March 17, 2014.
It said the loans were connected to areas including malaria control, erosion management, education and healthcare, adding that subsequent administrations continued servicing the obligations.
The campaign council argued that borrowing itself was not necessarily wrong when funds were used for development. However, it questioned the borrowing record in light of Obi’s public claims about fiscal responsibility.
The Peter Obi Anambra record was also criticised over alleged unpaid salaries during his time as governor.
Campaign council cites Water Corporation workers
The APC council referred to a 2006 memo reportedly written by Obi’s then-Chief of Staff, Chuks Ileogbunam, concerning outstanding salaries owed to workers of the Anambra State Water Corporation.
According to the statement, the memo appealed to Obi to release about N15 million required for the workers’ monthly salaries, warning that the employees could protest at the Governor’s Office if their situation remained unresolved.
The campaign council further alleged that Obi had promised during his campaign for governor that he would leave office if workers were not paid as and when due.
It argued that the claim should be considered alongside the financial obligations it says remained when Obi left office.
APC challenges Obi over 2027 presidential bid
The APC Presidential Campaign Council said Obi should address the issues raised by the Anambra State Government rather than relying on his previous claims about his administration’s financial record.
The council also criticised Obi over a recent solidarity visit to a person it described as facing an EFCC trial over alleged financial misconduct. The statement did not establish any finding of guilt against the individual.
The Peter Obi Anambra record is likely to remain part of the political debate as the 2027 presidential contest develops.
The APC campaign council concluded by calling on Obi to reconsider his presidential ambition, citing his reported earlier position that he would withdraw from the race if it were established that his administration left Anambra with liabilities.
