Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai says recent challenges have given him a clearer view of his relationships with friends, colleagues and associates.
El-Rufai made the remarks in a statement titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath”, dated September 23, 2026.
He said his experiences had shown him how different people respond when circumstances change.
El-Rufai Reflects on His Relationships
The former governor said he had supported people and causes because of his faith, upbringing, personal values and conscience.
He said he never expected praise or loyalty in return for the support he offered.
According to El-Rufai, people he previously helped are now free to decide how they respond to his own circumstances.
He said some may speak up, remain silent or distance themselves from past relationships. Others may also choose to view their past differently.
El-Rufai said he would not judge anyone simply because their response differed from what he expected.
The El-Rufai relationships issue, he said, has helped him understand people and life from a different perspective.
‘Adversity Illuminates Relationships’
Reflecting on recent events, El-Rufai said difficult periods can reveal the strength of relationships.
He acknowledged that the experience could make him reconsider some of his relationships. However, he stressed that such reflection should not amount to condemnation.
The former governor said he had no regrets about supporting people when he believed it was right.
He also said other people’s actions would not change his principles.
“I bear no resentment towards anyone who chooses not to do the same for me,” he said.
El-Rufai Rules Out Revenge
El-Rufai also addressed the possibility of retaliation over what he described as injustice, ingratitude or injury.
He said he would not seek revenge or retribution against anyone.
The El-Rufai relationships reflection, he added, was about gaining a better understanding of people rather than settling scores.
He said he would leave ultimate judgment to Almighty Allah and focus on remaining at peace with his conscience and faith.
“Each of us must live with the choices we make,” he said, adding that posterity would ultimately judge those choices.
Former Governor Faces Court Case
The statement comes as El-Rufai continues to face legal proceedings in Abuja.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed October 26, 2026, to rule on his no-case submission in a case involving alleged unlawful interception of telephone communications.

The Department of State Services (DSS) filed an amended five-count charge against him. El-Rufai has pleaded not guilty.
His lawyers argue that the prosecution has not established a prima facie case. The DSS has opposed the submission and asked the court to require El-Rufai to open his defence.
