A Labour Party chieftain, Abayomi Arabambi, has filed separate lawsuits against the West African Examinations Council, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the National Youth Service Corps over official records relating to Peter Obi’s academic credentials.
The Peter Obi Credentials Suit was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja under the Freedom of Information Act, 2011. Arabambi is asking the court to compel the three institutions to release existing records concerning certificates allegedly issued to the former Anambra State governor.
The suits followed Arabambi’s claim that the institutions either failed to respond to his requests for information or did not provide reasons for withholding the records.
The case against WAEC is marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2064/2026, while the action against NYSC is marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2063/2026. Both cases were filed on September 1, 2026. The suit against UNN, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2144/2026, was filed on September 9.
The cases were filed by Arabambi’s lawyer, Anderson Asemota.
Arabambi explained that he was not asking the court to decide whether the certificates Peter Obi submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 presidential election were genuine or forged.
Rather, he wants the institutions to disclose their own official records so that the details and status of the certificates can be independently established.
In the case against WAEC, Arabambi is seeking a Certified True Copy of WAEC Certificate No. SC042560, reportedly issued to Obi Gregory Onwubuase in June 1978.
For UNN, he wants access to the university’s certificate register, academic records, graduation documents, Senate or degree-award records and other relevant materials concerning Certificate No. D000198, where such records exist.
He also stressed that his request was aimed at determining what UNN’s official documents contain about the certificate, rather than asking the court to pronounce on its authenticity.
In the suit against NYSC, Arabambi requested records relating to Certificate No. 203495, said to have been issued to “Obi, Gregory Peter-Onwubuase” on May 1, 1986.
He is also seeking documents upon which the certificate was based, as well as information showing how the name “Peter-Onwubuase” appears in the organisation’s records.
Court documents revealed that WAEC rejected his request in a letter dated August 11, 2026, citing provisions of the Freedom of Information Act. Arabambi, however, alleged that UNN and NYSC failed to grant his requests or explain their refusal.

The Peter Obi Credentials Suit is asking the court to declare that the failure to provide the requested information amounted to a refusal or deemed refusal under the law.
Arabambi is also seeking an order of mandamus compelling UNN and NYSC to communicate the results of their verification of the certificates using their official records.
He wants the institutions to identify any information they consider exempt from disclosure and state the legal provisions supporting such exemptions. He is further asking that all portions of the records not covered by any exemption be released.
The plaintiff also urged the court to apply Section 25 of the Freedom of Information Act where public interest in disclosure outweighs the reasons given for withholding the information.
No hearing date had been announced for the three cases as of the time the report was filed.
