Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Olu Jacobs dies at the age of 84, bringing an end to the career of one of the country’s most recognised figures in theatre, television and film.
His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in a family statement shared on social media on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The family described him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, while referring to him as the “Lion of Lufodo.”
The family also asked bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn the actor.
Olu Jacobs’ remarkable acting career
Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs built an acting career that spanned several decades and crossed both British and Nigerian entertainment industries.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England before working with repertory theatres in Britain and appearing in British television productions and international films. He later returned to Nigeria, where he became a major figure in Nollywood.
Throughout his career, Jacobs received several honours, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007 and the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2011.
He was also married to fellow veteran actress Joke Silva, with whom he was associated with the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.
