President Bola Tinubu has joined the tributes following the death of veteran Nollywood actor and film executive Olu Jacobs, describing the passing of the celebrated entertainer as a major loss to Nigeria and the global creative community.
Jacobs, whose full name was Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the age of 84. His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Jacobs as one of Nigeria’s prominent actors whose career covered theatre, television and film.
Tinubu praises Olu Jacobs’ contribution to Nollywood
Tinubu said Jacobs played an important role in the growth and professional development of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, while his performances influenced generations of actors and filmmakers.
The President described his death as a “great loss” to Nigeria, the African film industry and audiences around the world who appreciated the performing arts.
According to Tinubu, Jacobs’ body of work will continue to influence future generations, while his contribution to Nigeria’s cultural identity and international image remains significant.
The President also highlighted the actor’s ability to bring depth and authenticity to his roles, qualities that earned him recognition both in Nigeria and internationally.
Olu Jacobs’ career and legacy
Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before building an extensive career in British television and international films.
He later returned to Nigeria and became one of the prominent figures in Nollywood, earning several industry honours during his long career. He was also conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.
Tinubu noted that Jacobs’ career demonstrated the contribution of Nigerian creative professionals to the country’s culture and economy.
Tinubu sends condolences to Joke Silva, family
As part of his tribute, the President extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children, relatives, colleagues and members of the wider creative industry.
The Tinubu mourns Olu Jacobs tribute comes as tributes continue to emerge following the death of the veteran actor, with colleagues and public figures reflecting on his decades-long contribution to Nigerian cinema.
President Tinubu also prayed for the peaceful repose of Jacobs’ soul and comfort for the family during the period of mourning.
