Dolly Parton’s legacy could soon welcome millions of visitors to Tennessee, as authorities in Nashville have started the process of adding the late country music legend’s name to the city’s international airport.
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority Board of Commissioners voted unanimously, 6–0, to explore incorporating Parton’s name into Nashville International Airport.
The decision came weeks after the singer died at the age of 80. However, officials stressed that the airport has not yet been renamed Dolly Parton International Airport, as discussions are still ongoing over the most appropriate way to honour her.
The proposal gained momentum after Parton’s death on August 25, with an online petition reportedly attracting more than 175,000 signatures in support of naming the airport after her.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee had earlier endorsed the idea, describing the airport as the state’s gateway to the world and saying it would be fitting for it to bear the name of Tennessee’s “favourite daughter.”
Parton was born in Sevier County, Tennessee, and rose from poverty to become one of the most influential figures in country music. Her career spanned more than six decades, producing global hits such as Jolene, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You.
Her contributions also extended beyond music. Through the Dolly Parton Foundation and Imagination Library, she supported childhood literacy and helped distribute hundreds of millions of books to children across different countries.
Supporters of the airport tribute believe the proposal recognises not only her musical achievements but also her impact on Tennessee’s culture, tourism, economy and international image.
The plan has also brought together political figures from both sides of the divide. Despite Nashville’s Democratic leadership and Tennessee’s Republican-controlled state government, officials have expressed support for the honour.
The renaming process may take some time, and the airport’s existing code, BNA, is expected to remain unchanged.
If approved, the tribute would place Dolly Parton’s name on one of Tennessee’s most important gateways, ensuring that her connection to the state continues to be recognised by travellers from around the world.
