NIS and NCoS tenure extensions approved by President Bola Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has extended the tenures of Kemi Nandap and Sylvester Nwakuche until 2028.

President Bola Tinubu has extended the tenures of two key security agency chiefs, Kemi Nandap of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and Sylvester Nwakuche of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).

Under the approved extensions, Nandap will remain in office until June 30, 2028, while Nwakuche’s tenure has been extended until May 2028.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga announced the decision in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

Tinubu Extends Tenures to Address Succession Gap

According to Onanuga, the president approved the extensions following a recommendation from the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The recommendation was aimed at addressing a succession gap in both services. It will also give their respective boards sufficient time to appoint successors.

The NIS and NCoS tenure extensions are expected to provide time for the agencies to complete the succession process.

What to Know About Kemi Nandap’s Appointment

Tinubu nominated Nandap as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service on February 21, 2024.

The Senate confirmed her appointment on March 1, 2024. Her tenure will now continue until June 30, 2028, under the latest presidential approval.

Nandap leads the agency responsible for immigration administration and border control in Nigeria.

Nwakuche to Remain in Charge of Correctional Service

The president also extended the tenure of Sylvester Nwakuche, Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, until May 2028.

The service oversees correctional facilities and the custody and rehabilitation of inmates across the country.

Onanuga said Tinubu commended both agency chiefs for the reforms recorded under their leadership. The president also urged them to build on the progress made so far.

The extensions will allow both officials to remain in office while the process of selecting their successors is addressed.
