NiMet has warned of severe thunderstorms across 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a NiMet thunderstorm alert to residents across 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory, warning that severe weather conditions could spread across the affected areas within one to six hours.

The agency released the warning at about 4:00 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026, through its official X account. At the time of the announcement, active thunderstorms had already been observed over Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Plateau, Kano, Jigawa and Kaduna.

NiMet said the storm system was moving westward and could affect parts of northern, central and southern Nigeria. The expected weather conditions include strong winds ahead of rainfall, moderate to heavy downpours and frequent lightning.

The areas identified in the NiMet thunderstorm alert include Kano, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Plateau, the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Enugu, Abia, Imo, Delta, Bayelsa, Anambra, Ebonyi, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

NiMet Warns of Flooding and Other Risks

The weather agency cautioned that the storms could cause flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone communities. Other possible dangers include falling tree branches, displaced outdoor objects, poor visibility, slippery roads and power outages.

NiMet also warned that heavy rainfall could wash away nutrients from farmland, especially in areas where fertilisers or pesticides had recently been applied.

Residents were advised to secure loose objects around their homes and avoid driving through flooded roads. Motorists were also urged to reduce their speed during rainfall because of slippery surfaces and limited visibility.

The agency further advised people to unplug electrical appliances during thunderstorms and stay away from tall trees, weak structures and other exposed locations.

Airline operators were encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather reports to ensure proper flight planning and safety.

NiMet urged the public to continue monitoring its official updates as the weather situation develops, noting that the NiMet thunderstorm alert was intended to help residents and relevant authorities prepare for the possible impact of the storms.
