The FCT Police Command has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of motorists operating vehicles without valid number plates or tinted-glass permits.
The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, issued the directive as the command begins stricter enforcement of vehicle identification rules across the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the directive was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.
FCT police target vehicles without number plates
Sanusi warned vehicle owners against driving cars without valid number plates or tinted permits.
The directive also covers vehicles with concealed, defaced or deliberately faded registration numbers.
The police commissioner said special attention would be given to the use of SUVs, with the exception of those officially used by top government officials.
Police warn against fake diplomatic plates
The CP also cautioned motorists against using fake diplomatic number plates or displaying diplomatic plates without proper authorisation.
Sanusi said the decision followed concerns over the growing use of such vehicles by suspected criminals to avoid identification and detection.
He explained that vehicles with concealed or improper identification could make it difficult for security agencies to track suspects involved in criminal activities.
The commissioner directed police officers across the FCT to intensify enforcement and ensure motorists comply with existing laws on vehicle identification and tinted glasses.
However, he ordered officers to carry out the operation professionally and warned them against using the exercise to extort motorists.
Sanusi urged FCT residents to cooperate with the police and report suspicious vehicles or activities to the nearest police station.
Residents can also contact the FCT Police Command through its emergency numbers, 08032003913 and 08028940883.
