Police in Imo State have launched a search operation for abducted NYSC members and other passengers after suspected armed men attacked two buses along a major highway.
The incident involved buses carrying National Youth Service Corps members travelling from Ibadan to Uyo in Akwa Ibom State and Bende in Abia State.
The Imo State Police Command said security operatives had already rescued 10 victims and recovered the two buses involved in the attack.
Police Search for Abducted NYSC Members
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to journalists in Owerri on Thursday.
According to the police, the two buses came under attack from suspected armed men while travelling along the highway.
Security personnel responded quickly to the incident, leading to the recovery of both vehicles and the rescue of 10 people at the scene.
The rescued victims were said to be safe and receiving the necessary attention from the authorities.
However, the police said they were still working to determine the exact number of people taken away by the attackers.
Security Operatives Begin Rescue Operation
The command said its operatives, alongside other security agencies, had commenced a coordinated search-and-rescue operation.
The operation is being supported by intelligence-led tracking aimed at identifying the attackers, locating the abducted NYSC members and rescuing other victims.
Commissioner of Police in Imo State, CP Audu Bosso, and other security commanders reportedly visited the scene to assess the situation and issue operational directives.
The police assured that the operation would continue until all the victims are rescued and those responsible for the attack are arrested.
Police Reassure Families of Affected Corps Members
The command also said it was working with the NYSC Directorate to establish contact with the families of the affected corps members.
Authorities said families would be updated as more information becomes available.
Meanwhile, the affected section of the highway has been reopened to motorists, with security personnel deployed to protect commuters using the route.
The police urged residents and motorists to remain alert and provide credible information that could assist the ongoing investigation.
The command also assured the public that information supplied by members of the public would be treated confidentially.
