Four men have died and another sustained injuries after a Toyota Camry crashed along the Awka–Enugu Expressway in Anambra State.
The accident occurred around 4:31 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2026, opposite the Old Government House in Awka.
The vehicle, a white Toyota Camry with registration number ASB 264 AV, was carrying five male adults when it reportedly veered off the road into a drainage, struck a culvert and somersaulted.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday.
The Sector Public Education Officer, Margaret Onabe, said preliminary investigations suggested that excessive speed caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Four Confirmed Dead After Anambra Road Crash
According to Onabe, three victims were initially taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital in Awka, where doctors confirmed their deaths.
The fourth victim was later taken to Apex Hospital, Awka, where medical personnel also confirmed his death.
The fifth occupant survived but sustained injuries and was evacuated to a hospital for medical attention.
The FRSC said the victims had been taken to the hospitals before its rescue team arrived at the scene.
The agency also disclosed that officers recovered the damaged vehicle and towed it to the FRSC Command.
Among the items recovered were personal belongings, including ₦185,300 in cash and a car key holder.
FRSC Warns Motorists Against Excessive Speeding
The Anambra State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured survivor a speedy recovery.
She cautioned motorists against excessive speeding, particularly during early morning journeys when visibility may be reduced.
Asekhauno urged drivers to obey speed limits, maintain proper control of their vehicles and ensure that safety equipment, including approved speed-limiting devices, remained functional.
The FRSC also reminded motorists that excessive speed reduces reaction time and increases the severity of road accidents.
The command urged all road users to prioritise safety and exercise caution while travelling.
FRSC Recalls Fatal Bauchi–Maiduguri Highway Crash
The latest accident comes months after another deadly road crash near Zangoro Village along the Bauchi–Maiduguri Federal Highway.
In August, nine people reportedly died after being burnt beyond recognition, while eight others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The FRSC said that crash occurred at approximately 11:20 p.m. on a Monday, with the agency receiving a report five minutes later.
The incidents have renewed attention on road safety and the dangers of excessive speeding on Nigerian highways.
