Former Vice-President and 2027 African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has said his meeting with former First Lady Aisha Buhari reminded him of the need to put the welfare and dignity of Nigerians at the centre of efforts to build a better country.

The Aisha Buhari visit to Atiku took place in Abuja, with Atiku disclosing the meeting in a post on his X account. He described the encounter as warm and deeply appreciated.

According to Atiku, the significance of the meeting went beyond the usual courtesies associated with such a visit. He said it reinforced the responsibility of those seeking to improve Nigeria to focus on the wellbeing and future of citizens.

“Beyond the courtesies of the occasion, it was also a reminder of the urgent responsibility before all who seek a better Nigeria: to put the welfare, dignity and future of our people first,” Atiku said.

The former vice-president used the occasion to draw attention to the economic pressures facing households across the country.

He identified the rising costs of food, transportation, education, healthcare and other basic necessities as some of the challenges putting pressure on Nigerian families.

Atiku argued that Nigerians need an economy that creates opportunities, rewards hard work and gives families the ability to live with dignity and hope.

The Aisha Buhari visit to Atiku therefore became an occasion for the former vice-president to restate his position on the need to reduce the economic burden facing citizens.

He said building a country that works for its people would require collective action aimed at easing hardship and restoring confidence in the future.

“That is the Nigeria we must build together, a country that works for its people again. We must ease the burden, restore hope and make Nigeria Affordable Again,” he said.

However, neither Aisha Buhari nor Atiku publicly disclosed the specific purpose of their meeting or details of their discussions. The visit comes as political activities continue to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku is expected to contest the 2027 presidential election under the ADC, while Aisha Buhari is the widow of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The former vice-president’s comments after the meeting focused primarily on economic conditions and his call for policies that would improve opportunities and living standards for Nigerians.
