The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council has called on the Presidency to explain President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s continued absence from Nigeria.
The council said Tinubu had remained outside the country six days after the end of the three-week vacation earlier communicated to Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the ADC said the extension of the President’s stay abroad had raised questions about his whereabouts and the arrangements for exercising presidential authority.
ADC asks Presidency to speak
The council argued that Nigerians deserve clear information about the President’s location and the circumstances surrounding his continued stay outside the country.
According to the ADC, the matter goes beyond Tinubu’s personal movements because it concerns the exercise of executive powers while he remains abroad.
The group said the Presidency should provide an explanation, particularly as the country continues to face economic difficulties and security concerns.
Council questions vacation extension
The ADC also asked the Presidency to clarify the status of Tinubu’s vacation and the constitutional arrangements governing the country during his absence.
The council questioned reports that the vacation had been extended and that Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, had continued representing the President at official engagements.
The ADC said it wanted clarification on who was constitutionally exercising presidential authority while Tinubu remained outside Nigeria.
ADC calls for transparency
The council said Nigerians were entitled to information about matters affecting the operation of the Presidency.
It urged the Tinubu administration to disclose the President’s current location, explain the reason for his prolonged absence and clarify the constitutional basis for the current arrangement.
The ADC warned that continued silence could increase public concern and encourage speculation.
It called for what it described as greater transparency and accountability in the handling of presidential responsibilities.
