The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Kaduna State, Barrister Mohammed Sani Abbas, has condemned the incident involving the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, while he was travelling into Makurdi, Benue State.
Abbas described the incident as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that citizens in a democratic society should be able to move freely, participate in political activities and express their views without intimidation.
In a statement issued by Ibrahim Muhammad, the Kaduna governorship candidate expressed solidarity with Obi, his family, supporters and others affected by the incident.
Abbas said political disagreements should not be allowed to degenerate into violence, harassment or actions that could endanger lives and weaken democratic principles.
He called on the government and relevant security agencies to treat the incident with seriousness and conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.
According to him, those found to have played a role in the incident should be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us. We may belong to different political parties and hold different opinions, but our shared commitment must be to peace, justice, democracy, and the protection of human life,” Abbas said.
He also appealed to Nigerians to reject political violence and intimidation, urging political actors and citizens to embrace dialogue and respect democratic values.
“Enough is enough. Justice must prevail,” he added.
