The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected the proposed Learner ID Number, demanding that the planned implementation of the National Learner Identification Number (LIN) be suspended.
NANS, which represents Nigerian students across the country and in the diaspora, said it was unacceptable for policies directly affecting students to be introduced without adequate consultation with the student body.
The association’s President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, said NANS recognised the importance of maintaining a reliable database within the education sector but opposed the creation of a separate identification system for learners.
“Anything done for Nigerian students without NANS is outrightly against us,” Afeez said.
Why NANS Rejects the Learner ID Number
Afeez argued that the proposed Learner ID Number was unnecessary because Nigerian citizens already have the National Identification Number (NIN), which serves as the country’s recognised identification system.
According to him, government agencies should focus on improving and maximising the existing national identification system instead of creating another identification number specifically for students.
NANS called for wider consultation with student representatives before policies affecting their education, welfare, academic records and future are formulated or implemented.
The association maintained that students are key stakeholders in Nigeria’s education system and should have a meaningful role in decisions that directly affect them.
Afeez also questioned the role of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in introducing the proposed identification system.
He urged the agency to remain within its statutory responsibilities and avoid taking on duties that, according to NANS, fall outside its mandate.
The student body further criticised the proposed policy for potentially placing an additional burden on millions of Nigerian students.
NANS said an agency whose responsibilities include promoting communication between government and citizens and encouraging public participation should prioritise consultation rather than introduce policies without adequate engagement with those affected.
The association therefore reiterated its opposition to the Learner ID Number and called for the suspension of its implementation pending proper consultation with students and other relevant stakeholders.
NANS said the government should strengthen existing identification structures where necessary instead of creating what it described as a duplication of the national identification system.
