Peter Obi and the Nigeria Democratic Congress’ Kogi East senatorial candidate, Peter Ameh, have urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and protect their votes during the 2027 general election, while calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a free, fair and credible poll.
The two politicians made the call on Sunday in Ogugu, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, during a thank-you tour organised for Ameh after he emerged as the NDC candidate for Kogi East.
Obi, who was received by a large crowd of supporters in the community, said the 2027 general election should be centred on issues affecting Nigerians rather than political distractions.
The former Anambra State governor challenged presidential candidates to travel across the country, listen to citizens and understand the problems confronting communities.
According to Obi, his visits to different parts of the country were aimed at understanding the challenges facing Nigerians and identifying ways to improve governance.
He said the next government must prioritise education, environmental protection and opportunities that would enable Nigerians to earn decent livelihoods.
Speaking with journalists, Obi said his major concern was not the eventual outcome of the 2027 general election, but whether Nigerians would be able to protect their votes and ensure that every ballot cast was properly counted.

He urged voters to demand a credible electoral process and elect leaders based on competence, capacity, character, compassion and commitment to national development.
Obi also expressed concern about the worsening economic conditions across the country, particularly the hardship faced by people in rural communities.
He said Nigeria had enormous agricultural potential but had failed to provide adequate support for farmers to maximise the country’s resources and produce enough food for the population.
The NDC presidential candidate maintained that Nigeria needed visionary leadership capable of addressing poverty, hunger and other challenges affecting citizens.
Ameh, meanwhile, said Kogi East had sufficient natural and human resources to become more prosperous but had continued to suffer from poor infrastructure and inadequate public services.
He pointed to the coal deposits in Ankpa and complained about the condition of roads linking communities in the area, despite the large volume of trucks transporting coal from the region.
Ameh also criticised the state of primary healthcare facilities across Kogi State, describing the situation as unacceptable and calling for greater attention to healthcare and education.
The senatorial candidate urged voters to examine the records and capacity of candidates before deciding who to support in the 2027 general election.
Ameh alleged that the people’s votes had previously been denied their intended impact and urged residents to vote and remain at polling units to protect their ballots.
He argued that credible representation at the National Assembly would help communities demand better roads, healthcare facilities, schools and other basic amenities.
According to Ameh, the interests of the people should take priority over the personal ambitions of political office seekers.
He called for renewed investment in public institutions and urged voters to support candidates with proven experience, capacity and records of service.
Both Obi and Ameh stressed the importance of voter vigilance as Nigerians prepare for the 2027 general election, with Obi insisting that citizens must be able to choose their leaders freely and have their votes counted.
