The Wike-Fubara meeting in Port Harcourt has renewed attention on Rivers State’s political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, met Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other political stakeholders at the governor’s private residence on Sunday.
Wike arrived at about 4:30 p.m. alongside key figures associated with the Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State. The discussions came amid efforts to build consensus among influential political groups ahead of the polls.
However, officials had not released an official statement detailing the outcome of the meeting as of the time of reporting.
Wike-Fubara Meeting Focuses on 2027 Political Alignment
Lere Olayinka, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, said the meeting focused on political alignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Olayinka, the discussions could support a broader arrangement involving President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid and other candidates associated with the Rainbow Coalition.
He described the engagement as part of ongoing consultations among major political figures in Rivers State.
Olayinka also recalled that a similar meeting took place on October 7. He said Sunday’s discussions continued efforts to reach an understanding among the state’s key political stakeholders.
He linked the latest engagement to Wike’s public declaration of support for Tinubu’s second-term bid.
Rainbow Coalition Seeks Consensus Ahead of 2027
The Wike-Fubara meeting comes as political actors continue consultations over the coalition’s plans for the next general elections.
Wike, a former Rivers State governor, remains an influential figure in the state’s political landscape. Fubara, the incumbent governor, also commands significant support among local political stakeholders.
The latest meeting suggests that discussions are continuing between the two camps. However, the full terms of any agreement remain unclear because no official communiqué has been released.
The extent of the emerging political arrangement will depend on further statements and concrete decisions by those involved.
Tinubu’s Re-Election Bid Features in Discussions
Olayinka said the talks also carried national political significance because of Wike’s support for Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
The minister has been engaging political stakeholders to mobilise support ahead of the 2027 elections. According to reports, these efforts include consultations in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.
The Wike-Fubara meeting therefore forms part of wider political discussions as parties and coalitions prepare for the next electoral cycle.
For now, the participants have not publicly disclosed all the issues discussed or announced any new agreement arising from Sunday’s meeting.
