The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has challenged former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi to account for the projects and political empowerment he brought to Evo Kingdom and Rivers State during his years in public office.
Wike made the remarks on Friday, October 2, 2026, while speaking with leaders and stakeholders of Evo Kingdom in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The FCT minister questioned Amaechi’s record after serving as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor and later Minister of Transportation.
Wike Questions Amaechi’s 24-Year Record
According to Wike, Amaechi spent eight years in each of the three positions, giving him a combined 24 years in top government offices.
He challenged people in the kingdom to identify tangible projects or political empowerment that Amaechi attracted to the area or the wider state during that period.
Wike said, “Someone was Speaker of the House of Assembly for eight years, Governor for eight years, and Minister for eight years—that is 24 years in top leadership positions.”
He then questioned what could be identified as Amaechi’s contribution to Evo Kingdom or Rivers State during those years.
Wike also compared the situation with his own time as Minister of State for Education, saying he could identify projects he helped bring to Rivers State.
Wike Speaks on Leadership and Empowerment
The FCT minister also criticised political leaders who, according to him, use their positions to prevent others from rising.
He argued that people who attain political power should create opportunities for others and develop new leaders who can continue after they leave office.
Wike said leadership should not be about holding power for oneself. He added that political structures should remain strong enough to continue even after a leader is gone.
He also recalled his administration’s restructuring of the chieftaincy institution, saying the move gave Evo Kingdom representation on the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers.
Wike Reaffirms Support for Tinubu
Wike also spoke about his political future, saying he had no ambition to return to offices he had previously occupied.
He said he had already served as governor and minister and was satisfied with what he had achieved.
The minister further reaffirmed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and said his focus was on contributing to sustainable leadership.
Wike also advised politicians and supporters not to place absolute confidence in human promises, saying political relationships can change.
At the meeting, traditional and political leaders, including Eze Temple Ejekwu and Elder Peter Chinwo, President of the Evo Assembly, expressed support for Wike and candidates backed by the Rainbow Coalition.
What Wike Said About Amaechi’s Record
Wike’s comments add to the long-running political rivalry between him and Amaechi. His latest remarks focused on what he described as the development and political legacy left after Amaechi’s 24 years in top public positions.
