President Bola Tinubu has said Nigerians are free to insult and verbally attack him without fear of facing consequences, describing tolerance of criticism as a key part of his administration.
Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, made the remarks in Abuja during the 100th anniversary celebration of Daily Times of Nigeria Limited.
The President said Nigerians who criticise his administration can go to bed peacefully despite their attacks and negative comments against him.
According to Tinubu, the administration’s position on criticism reflects its commitment to press freedom and the principles of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Let us admit that under this government, you can insult and attack the President and still go to bed without midnight troubles,” he said.
Tinubu described the tolerance of criticism as part of his government’s broader commitment to national renewal.
He said the task of rebuilding the country requires the government to acknowledge past challenges while making difficult decisions necessary to move Nigeria forward.
“The task of national renewal requires the courage to understand where we have come from and confront what we have laid back and made difficult, necessary choices, but where we must go,” the President said.
The remarks come amid ongoing public criticism of the Tinubu administration over its policies and handling of national issues.
The President’s comments also reaffirmed his administration’s stated position on press freedom and the right of Nigerians to express their views about the government.
