Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has publicly thrown his weight behind his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his chosen successor for the 2027 governorship election.

The endorsement was made on Monday after a private meeting held at the Lagos House in Marina, where Hamzat officially informed top government officials and party stakeholders of his intention to run for the state’s top office.

The meeting was attended by members of the State Executive Council and influential figures within the party, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, among others from the Governor’s Advisory Council.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Sanwo-Olu described the decision to support Hamzat as a collective one, stressing that those present were in agreement about his readiness to lead the state. He praised his deputy’s competence and familiarity with governance, noting that Hamzat possesses deep knowledge of the system.

Reflecting on their years of working together, the governor commended Hamzat’s character, highlighting his loyalty, dedication, and strong sense of responsibility. He added that these qualities make him well-suited for the role.

Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in shaping both his and Hamzat’s political journeys, describing the current development as part of a broader vision coming to fruition.

According to the governor, the meeting served as a platform for consultation among party leaders and government officials, culminating in a shared position that Hamzat is prepared to take on the responsibility of governing Lagos State.

The move is seen as an early signal of political positioning within the ruling All Progressives Congress as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 elections.
