Chief Ralph Obioha, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle and former NADECO chieftain, has died at the age of 80.

Obioha died on Saturday, October 3, 2026, according to a statement released by his family. His son, Chima Obioha, signed the statement announcing the death.

The family did not disclose the cause of his death. It also asked the public for privacy as relatives mourn the elder statesman.

Ralph Obioha dies after decades of public service

Ralph Obioha played a major role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement during the military era.

He became a prominent member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during the struggle that followed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Obioha operated from Canada and the United States alongside other activists. They pushed for the restoration of the democratic mandate believed to have been won by the late MKO Abiola.

His activism made him a notable voice in Nigeria’s fight against military rule.

Ex-NADECO chieftain also served as lawmaker

Beyond his role in NADECO, Obioha had a long political and business career.

He served as a member of the House of Representatives during the Second Republic. He later founded the Justice Party, which fielded Rev. Chris Okotie in the 2003 presidential election.

Obioha also served as chairman of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee.

He remained active in public affairs and continued to speak on issues affecting Nigeria.

Ralph Obioha rejected Tinubu’s national honour

Obioha made headlines again in June 2026 after President Bola Tinubu announced a national honour for him.

However, the former NADECO activist later declined the honour. He cited concerns over insecurity and the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu.

His decision came decades after he had joined the struggle for democratic rule in Nigeria.

The Tinubu administration had included Obioha among Nigerians recognised for their roles in the June 12 democratic struggle.

Family announces funeral plans

The Obioha family described him as a beloved father, husband, grandfather and friend.

They also remembered him as a patriot, elder statesman, political leader and businessman who believed in Nigeria’s progress.

The family said details of his memorial and funeral arrangements would be announced later.

Ralph Obioha’s death marks the passing of a notable figure associated with Nigeria’s long struggle for democratic rule.
