A Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State, has claimed the lives of 32 people, including children and family members of military personnel.
The ATR-42 aircraft crashed into a swamp opposite the Naval Base in Igbokoda on Monday, October 5, 2026.
The aircraft had 25 passengers and seven crew members on board. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo confirmed the death toll.
Children among victims of NAF crash
Some of the passengers were children travelling back to school.
Family members of military officers serving in Edo and Delta states were also on the aircraft.
Sources said the aircraft was carrying airmen, soldiers and their relatives during a routine logistics flight.
The aircraft was travelling from Benin to Lagos when air traffic controllers lost contact with it at about 9:13 a.m.
The Nigerian Air Force later confirmed that the aircraft crashed near the Naval Base in Igbokoda.
NAF activates search and rescue operation
The Nigerian Air Force immediately launched a search and rescue operation after the crash.
NAF spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame said the aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos.
He said the operation was being conducted with relevant authorities and emergency agencies.
The NAF initially did not disclose the number of casualties.
The wreckage was later located in the swampy area near the Naval Base.
Bad weather linked to Ondo aircraft crash
Ilaje Local Government Chairman Maurice Oripelaye said initial findings pointed to poor weather conditions.
He said the pilot was reportedly trying to manoeuvre when the weather affected the aircraft.
The aircraft then crashed into a swampy area close to the water.
Ondo State Police spokesperson DSP Jimoh Abayomi also confirmed the incident.
He urged residents to remain calm and avoid sharing unverified information while investigations continued.
Governor Aiyedatiwa reacts to NAF crash
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and the Nigerian Air Force.
He directed the State Emergency Management Agency, Ministry of Health and security agencies to support the rescue and recovery efforts.
The governor also ordered authorities to secure the crash site and prevent interference with ongoing operations.
He urged residents of Igbokoda and nearby communities to cooperate with emergency responders.
Tinubu orders investigation into NAF crash
President Bola Tinubu also expressed sadness over the tragedy.
The President directed the Nigerian Air Force to conduct an immediate investigation into the cause of the crash.
Tinubu extended his condolences to the families of the 25 passengers and seven crew members.
He also commended the NAF and other emergency responders for their efforts at the crash site.
The President said the sacrifice of military personnel who serve the country would not be forgotten.
The crash has left Igbokoda in mourning as authorities continue efforts to recover the victims and establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
