A US pastor, Pastor Israel Ford, has defended his decision to marry a second wife, arguing that the Bible does not require men to have only one wife.
Ford, who leads LifeWorks Church in Wickliffe, Ohio, announced the marriage on Facebook. He shared a video recorded in church featuring himself, his first wife, Lydia Ford, and his new wife, Shakayla Ford.
The cleric used the announcement to explain his position on polygamy, challenging the belief that monogamy is the only form of marriage supported by scripture.
Pastor Israel Ford Defends Polygamy With Biblical Argument
Ford argued that society has taught people to view monogamy as the only acceptable form of marriage. However, he disagreed with that position.
He said many pastors avoid discussing polygamy because the subject remains unpopular among some Christians.
The cleric also announced plans to release a full sermon explaining his interpretation of biblical teachings on marriage later in the week.
Ford maintained that he would follow what he believes God had revealed to him rather than change his position to win public approval.
Pastor Israel Ford Responds to Possible Backlash
The pastor acknowledged that his decision could prompt some people to distance themselves from him.
However, he said he was prepared to accept their reaction and would not abandon his convictions simply because others disagreed with his marriage.
Ford also expressed confidence that those who chose to disconnect from him over the issue would eventually understand his position.
Polygamy Remains a Subject of Christian Debate
Polygamy, in which a person has more than one spouse, remains a subject of differing interpretations among Christians.
Some point to biblical figures who had multiple wives as evidence that the practice appears in scripture. Others emphasise teachings they interpret as supporting monogamous marriage.
Pastor Israel Ford’s announcement has renewed attention to the debate over biblical interpretation and marriage practices within Christian communities.
His promised sermon is expected to provide further details about the biblical reasoning behind his position.
