The newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, recently received the official certificate of appointment and staff of office as the 46th monarch of the ancient town. The ceremony took place with Governor Seyi Makinde presiding over the proceedings. Oba Owoade, who had been residing in Canada, landed at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos State and was warmly received by reporters, his wife, and a delegation that included Idris Aregbe, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts, and Culture. The arrival was celebrated with a vibrant display of traditional dancers and drummers, adding a festive atmosphere to the event.
The new Alaafin’s ascension to the throne highlights the enduring respect and reverence the Oyo monarchy commands. As emphasized by a media aide, the sacredness of the Alaafin institution is a key reason why the Oyo traditional monarchy continues to enjoy admiration and esteem, both within Yorubaland and beyond. This deep respect stems from the long and illustrious history of the Alaafin, whose contributions and leadership have been passed down through generations in both oral traditions and documented histories.
The media aide further noted that, in line with Governor Makinde’s directive, the coronation will be completed within the next four weeks. Traditional rites, which are essential to the coronation process, will be finalized during this period. Following these rites, Oba Owoade will proceed to Ipebi, a secluded part of the Alaafin palace, where he will undergo the final stages of the traditional rites in isolation—a key part of the monarch’s spiritual preparation.
The Oyo Kingdom’s royal heritage is rich in tradition, and Oba Owoade’s coronation marks a significant moment in the continued legacy of the Alaafin institution.
