The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has announced that it will proceed with its scheduled congresses and national convention despite delays by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in recognising its current leadership.
Speaking in Lagos on Saturday, the party’s founder, Boniface Aniebonam, stated that preparations for internal party activities are already underway and will not be halted by the ongoing recognition issues. According to him, the party has formally submitted its timetable for congresses, primaries, and convention to INEC and remains committed to participating in all elective positions, including the 2027 presidential race.
Aniebonam criticised INEC for failing to acknowledge the National Working Committee led by Agbo Major, despite existing court rulings. He noted that the prolonged leadership crisis and lack of recognition have limited the party’s ability to fully engage in electoral activities across the country.
He explained that the decision to move forward is aimed at giving party members the chance to contest in upcoming elections without further delay, especially as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
The NNPP founder also stressed that the party will continue to pursue official recognition of its leadership while engaging INEC to understand the reasons behind its non-compliance with court directives. He argued that judicial decisions should take precedence over administrative actions by electoral authorities.
To support his position, Aniebonam referenced past legal cases involving prominent political figures, highlighting the importance of adhering strictly to court rulings in Nigeria’s electoral process.
