The NiDCOM boss has honoured Nigerians and people of Nigerian descent who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, insisting that their names and legacies must never be forgotten.
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, paid tribute to the victims in a statement commemorating the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.
The statement, signed by NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, identified Godwin O. Ajala, Ignatius Udo Adanga, Olabisi Shadie Layeni-Yee, Sadie Ini Ette and Ayodeji Awe among the Nigerians and persons of Nigerian origin who lost their lives in the attacks.
The NiDCOM boss said 25 years had not erased the pain suffered by the families of those killed. She noted that behind the thousands of lives lost were people with families, careers, ambitions and personal dreams.
“We remember them. We remember their families. We remember the lives they lived and the dreams they carried. Twenty-five years later, they are not forgotten. Their names remain, and their stories must continue to be told,” she said.
Dabiri-Erewa expressed sympathy and solidarity with the relatives and loved ones of the victims. She also stressed the importance of preserving the memory of the tragedy for younger generations who were not alive when the attacks occurred.
According to her, the Nigerian victims reflected the global presence of Nigerians and the relationships they established in the countries and communities where they lived, worked and made contributions.
She said the anniversary should go beyond mourning the lives lost and should also provide an opportunity to celebrate the victims’ achievements, values and lasting legacies.
The NiDCOM boss reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to recognising the lives and contributions of Nigerians living abroad. She maintained that every Nigerian life deserved to be valued, irrespective of where the person resided.
Dabiri-Erewa prayed for the peaceful repose of the victims and asked God to grant their families continued strength, comfort and healing.
