Former Arsenal midfielder and football pundit Paul Merson does not expect Manchester United to suffer relegation from the Premier League, despite their worrying position near the bottom of the table.
Manchester United currently occupy 17th place after nine league matches. They have seven points, level with Crystal Palace, who sit in the relegation zone because of goal difference.
Merson believes the situation could become worse before the club turns things around. However, he remains convinced that the Red Devils will avoid dropping into the Championship at the end of the season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the pundit pointed to United’s December 5 fixture against Coventry City as a possible turning point in their difficult campaign.
He said he would be surprised if United were not among the bottom three by the time they face Coventry.
However, Merson was clear that he does not expect the club to finish the season in the relegation places.
Man Utd Relegation Fears Grow After Poor Results
United’s struggles have intensified following a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday, October 31.
The loss left Michael Carrick’s side fourth from bottom and extended their winless run across all competitions.
The club now face growing pressure to improve their results as the season progresses.
Merson suggested that United could remain in the relegation zone when they meet Coventry in December, although he stopped short of predicting that they would go down.
His comments reflect the difference between a difficult spell and the prospect of an entire season ending in relegation.
Merson Questions Expectations at Old Trafford
The former Arsenal star also questioned the expectations surrounding Manchester United, given their current performances.
He expressed surprise at the level of pressure surrounding the team and suggested that supporters should consider the challenges facing the club.
United have struggled to find consistency, and their position in the table has raised concerns among fans.
For now, Merson expects the club to avoid relegation, even if their poor run continues into December.
The Red Devils will need to improve their results to move away from the bottom of the Premier League table and ease the pressure on Carrick’s team.
