Suspected gunmen have killed prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka and his friend, Adamu Abubakar, in Katsina killing that has sparked concern in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area.
The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the deaths in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu.
According to the police, the attack occurred at about 7:30 p.m. in front of Masussuka’s residence in Dutsin-Ma. Two armed men riding on a motorcycle reportedly opened fire on the victims.
Both men sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Residents rushed them to a nearby hospital, where a doctor confirmed their deaths.
Katsina Killing: Police Launch Investigation
The police spokesperson said the Divisional Police Officer in Dutsin-Ma quickly led officers to the scene after receiving information about the attack.
Sadiq-Aliyu confirmed that investigators had begun work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings and identify those responsible.
“Investigations has commenced and efforts are being intensified to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar-Fage, has also ordered the deployment of tactical and operational teams to the area. Their assignment is to track down the fleeing suspects and bring them before the law.
Police Promise Arrest of Suspected Killers
Umar-Fage expressed condolences to the families, friends and followers of the deceased, as well as residents of Dutsin-Ma, over the tragic incident.
He assured the public that the command would continue its efforts until officers arrest those behind the attack.
The police also promised to provide further information as the investigation progresses.
The Katsina killing of the Islamic scholar and his friend adds to security concerns surrounding attacks by armed men. However, the police have yet to announce any arrests or disclose a possible motive for the shooting.
