Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, has arrived in Johannesburg to begin his diplomatic assignment, pledging to strengthen relations between both countries and protect Nigerians living there.

Fani-Kayode arrived at O. R. Tambo International Airport on Sunday. Senior diplomats and members of the Nigerian community welcomed him, alongside representatives of several diaspora organisations.

His media aide, Lizzy Okoji, said the envoy would focus on improving bilateral cooperation and safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians in South Africa.

Fani-Kayode Targets Stronger Nigeria-South Africa Relations

Fani-Kayode said his mission, under the mandate of President Bola Tinubu, would prioritise restoring friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

“Our focus is to rebuild the bridge of friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa while protecting the interests of our citizens,” he said.

He noted that Nigeria and South Africa rank among Africa’s largest economies. He called for closer cooperation to support regional stability, economic growth and Pan-African unity.

The high commissioner is also accredited to the Kingdoms of Lesotho and Eswatini, extending his diplomatic responsibilities beyond South Africa.

Diplomatic Mission Comes Amid Bilateral Concerns

Fani-Kayode’s arrival comes amid concerns over recurring socio-economic tensions between Nigeria and South Africa, as well as the welfare of Nigerians living in the country.

He is expected to hold high-level discussions with South African officials to address outstanding concerns, strengthen cooperation and promote peaceful coexistence.

The success of these engagements could shape efforts to improve relations and address issues affecting Nigerian residents and businesses in South Africa.

The airport reception featured cultural displays and celebrations organised by members of the Nigerian diaspora.

Those present included Ambassador Temitope Ajayi, a former Chargé d’Affaires at Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria, and Ambassador Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, Nigeria’s Consul General in Johannesburg.

Puleng Chaba, Acting Director for West Africa at South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, also attended.

Representatives of the Nigerian Union South Africa, the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa, the Nigeria Doctors Forum and student organisations joined the reception.

Fani-Kayode’s assignment will cover diplomatic engagement, economic cooperation and the protection of Nigerian citizens across the countries to which he is accredited.
