Court of Appeal Affirms Legitimacy of Oba Olaoye as Soun of Ogbomoso

Court of Appeal Clears Oba Olaoye's Selection

by Folawi Titilayo

On Tuesday, Justice Yargata Nimpar, leading a three-member panel, delivered a ruling in favor of Oba Olaoye. This decision followed the October 25, 2023, ruling by Justice K. A. Adedokun of the Oyo State High Court in Ogbomoso, which had declared Oba Olaoye’s selection invalid. The lower court had described the selection process as “irregular, null, and void,” citing non-compliance with the 1958 Soun Chieftaincy Declaration.

However, the Court of Appeal, sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, overturned the lower court’s judgment, effectively reaffirming Oba Olaoye’s legitimacy as the Soun of Ogbomoso. Justice Nimpar resolved all ten grounds of appeal in favor of Oba Olaoye.

A Brief History of Oba Olaoye

His Imperial Majesty (HIM) Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye, Orumogege III, also introduced the first-ever Ogbomoso Cradle Carnival. This historic event will coincide with the one-year anniversary of his ascension to the throne, which was celebrated December 19 to December 23, 2024.
