The 2025 Oscars took place on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with Anora, a screwball comedy-drama about a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, taking home the most prestigious awards at the 97th Academy Awards. The film dominated, winning Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay.
Other notable winners included Zoe Saldana, who claimed the Best Supporting Actress award, and Adrien Brody, who triumphed over Timothée Chalamet to win Best Actor. Kieran Culkin also kicked off the evening with a win for Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Real Pain.
Diversity was a strong theme throughout the evening, highlighted by victories for filmmakers from Brazil (I’m Still Here) and Iran (In the Shadow of the Cypress). No Other Land, named Best Documentary Feature, explores the expulsion of communities from the West Bank by the Israeli military. The film, created by a collective of Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers, earned multiple accolades, including Best Picture, Best Editing, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actress — the most awards of any nominated film.
Paul Tazewell made history as the first Black man to win an Academy Award for Costume Design, thanks to his work on Wicked. The film’s stars, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, opened the ceremony with a performance of several Oz-themed songs.
Sean Baker, the visionary behind Anora, became the first filmmaker in history to win four Oscars for a single film. The ceremony, which aired live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on ABC, was hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, with announcements made by Nick Offerman.
