A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has reportedly died after an alleged encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker at a hotel.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, within Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
According to reports, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with the young woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
The lecturer reportedly became unconscious and later died in the hotel room shortly after the alleged sexual encounter.
Police Arrest Three Over AAU Lecturer’s Death
The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the incident, saying three people have been taken into custody as investigations continue.
The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the incident was reported to the police on October 5, 2026.
According to her, Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman.
Ikoedem explained that the lecturer later asked the woman to go out and get him some water. When she returned, she reportedly found him lying lifeless inside the room.
The police subsequently arrested the sex worker, the hotel owner and the hotel manager in connection with the AAU lecturer’s death.
The deceased’s remains have since been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary, according to the police.
University Confirms Lecturer Was Its Staff
The university has also confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its staff.
The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, however, stressed that the incident did not occur on the university campus.
He said the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death were part of his private life and that the woman involved was not a student of the university.
The police are expected to continue their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the AAU lecturer’s death.
