Peter Obi has said the Obi/Kwankwaso movement will not fund vote-buying or give money to party agents to influence voters during the 2027 general elections.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) made the statement on Monday during a town hall meeting in Sokoto. He attended the meeting alongside his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, described the distribution of money to voters on election day as vote-buying. He linked the practice to the continued persistence of poverty in Nigeria.
Obi rejects vote-buying
According to Obi, his political movement would not provide funds to party agents for the purpose of persuading voters to support its candidates.
“We are not ready to give money to party agents to entice voters. That is vote-buying, and it is part of the reason why poverty continues to rise in the country,” he said.
The Obi/Kwankwaso movement has therefore stated that financial inducement will not form part of its approach to the 2027 election.
Obi also said voters would be protected during the election and that steps would be taken to ensure their votes are properly counted and recorded.
Obi promises voter protection
The NDC candidate assured those at the Sokoto meeting that adequate security arrangements would be made to protect voters during the polls.
He did not give specific details of the proposed security measures, but stressed the importance of protecting voters and ensuring that ballots are properly handled.
Kwankwaso accompanied Obi during the town hall meeting as the pair continued their engagements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The comments add vote-buying to the issues the Obi/Kwankwaso ticket has highlighted as part of its campaign ahead of the polls.
