Peter Obi Outlines New Strategy for 2027 Election
Peter Obi says his approach to the Peter Obi 2027 election campaign will be significantly different from what happened in 2023, insisting that he and his supporters will not leave the monitoring of votes entirely to electoral authorities.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) made the comments during an interview on Arise Television, where he reflected on the disputed 2023 election and discussed his plans for the next presidential contest.
Obi said his team had previously trusted assurances from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) but would take greater responsibility for monitoring the electoral process in 2027.
Obi plans independent election results monitoring
A major part of Obi’s Peter Obi 2027 election strategy is the creation of an independent system that would allow his political organisation to receive results directly from polling units.
He explained that the arrangement would operate alongside the official INEC process rather than attempt to replace the electoral commission.
According to Obi, results recorded at polling units would be transmitted to his organisation’s situation room, allowing his team to compare the figures with those eventually collated and announced by INEC.
He said the goal was to prevent a situation where results announced at a later stage could not be traced back to what voters and officials recorded at individual polling locations.
Obi argued that political parties and candidates needed to independently protect the integrity of their votes rather than simply rely on promises that the electoral process would be properly managed.

Obi maintains position on 2023 election
The former Anambra State governor again maintained that he won the 2023 presidential election, although INEC declared Bola Tinubu the winner.
However, Obi said he had chosen to move beyond the previous election and concentrate on the 2027 contest.
He recalled that his team had taken some aspects of the 2023 process for granted because of their confidence in INEC’s assurances.
For the coming election, he said that approach would change.
Obi also clarified comments he previously made in Port Harcourt about being ready to “die” for his votes, explaining that the statement was symbolic and meant to encourage supporters to protect their votes peacefully.
Opposition alliance decision not yet settled
Obi also addressed speculation surrounding discussions between opposition politicians ahead of 2027, particularly questions about whether he would accept a running-mate position or step aside for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
He said no such offer had been formally made to him and argued that decisions concerning an alliance could not be made by individual politicians alone.
According to Obi, political parties involved in any coalition would need to consult their members and reach an institutional agreement before deciding how to proceed.
He compared the process to the merger of two corporations, saying the leaders could not simply make a personal agreement without considering the institutions they represented.
Obi criticises Tinubu’s handling of insecurity
Beyond the election, Obi criticised President Bola Tinubu’s response to insecurity and questioned the president’s level of direct involvement in governing the country.
He argued that a president should spend more time in areas affected by violence and engage directly with communities and stakeholders facing security challenges.
Obi said insecurity would be his top priority if elected in 2027.
He promised to appoint competent security chiefs immediately and give them clear instructions to tackle kidnappings, terrorism and other forms of violent crime.
The former Anambra governor also said he would personally visit troubled areas instead of managing security challenges exclusively from Abuja.
Peter Obi rejects ransom payments and subsidy return
Obi said he would not support the payment of ransom to kidnappers, arguing that the government should deploy technology and security resources to locate criminals and rescue victims.
He also rejected a return to Nigeria’s previous fuel subsidy system, describing the former arrangement as being associated with corruption.
Instead, he said increasing the supply of crude oil to domestic refineries could help lower the cost of petroleum products.

Obi promises one-term presidency
On the presidency itself, Obi reiterated his position that he would serve only one four-year term if elected.
He argued that Nigerians should choose leaders based on competence rather than ethnic or religious considerations.
Despite his continuing disagreement with the outcome of the 2023 election, Obi said he would accept defeat in 2027 if the contest was conducted freely, fairly and credibly.
He said his priority was to ensure Nigerians could trust the electoral process and have confidence that the results announced genuinely reflected their votes.
