PAG urges peaceful political participation ahead of 2027.

The Political Awareness Group (PAG), an Islamic-oriented organisation in Oyo State, has urged its members to remain peaceful, united and politically informed as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The group made the call during its 3rd Triennial Conference, held recently at the University of Ibadan Central Mosque. The conference focused on the theme, “Muslims in the 2027 General Elections: Our Eggs and Baskets.”

PAG Calls for Responsible Political Participation

Immediate past chairman of PAG, Dr Lukman Fasasi, delivered the address and encouraged members to educate, mobilise and empower citizens. He also urged them to engage constructively with political stakeholders.

Fasasi said the group should promote justice, equity, competence, integrity and good governance for the benefit of Oyo State residents.

He stressed that PAG’s mission should extend beyond the 2027 elections. According to him, the organisation must build a lasting platform for political awareness and prepare future generations for responsible leadership.

Although PAG is not a political party, Fasasi said it should maintain its independence while promoting political education, issue-based advocacy and constructive engagement with governments and political actors.

2027 Elections: Group Warns Against Vote Buying

Fasasi said PAG must educate citizens about their civic rights and responsibilities while encouraging peaceful electoral participation.

He also urged the group to discourage vote buying and other electoral malpractice. Candidates, he said, should earn support based on their competence, character, integrity, capacity and commitment to good governance.

The former chairman added that PAG should continue to articulate the legitimate political aspirations of Muslims in Oyo State. These include the opportunity for a competent and responsible Muslim to lead the state.

Fasasi Urges Muslims to Put Unity First

Fasasi maintained that religious faith and competence could coexist in leadership. He called on members to protect the unity of the Muslim community despite differences in political affiliation, opinions and backgrounds.

He cited Qur’an 3:103, which calls on believers to hold firmly together to the rope of Allah and avoid division.

His message, he said, was that members must place their shared interests above political differences as the 2027 elections approach.
