The 2026 United Nations General Assembly has been dominated by rising tensions in the Middle East, with US President Donald Trump warning Iran while Qatar and Türkiye criticised Israel over the conflict.
World leaders gathered in New York amid intense diplomatic efforts over the US-Iran crisis, the Gaza conflict and wider regional security concerns.
Trump Warns Iran
Addressing the UN General Assembly, Trump warned Iran that it faced a choice between reaching an agreement and further action by the United States.
He reiterated that Washington would not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.
Despite the warning, US and Iranian representatives also held mediated discussions on the sidelines of the UN meeting.
US officials described the discussions as constructive, while Iranian representatives linked further progress to issues including the Strait of Hormuz and the ongoing military pressure.
Qatar Calls for Diplomacy
Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, urged greater diplomatic efforts to resolve the regional crisis.
He described the situation in the Gulf as one of its most dangerous periods and called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The Qatari leader also backed negotiations as the preferred route to resolving the crisis.
Türkiye Criticises Israel
Türkiye’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, used his address to criticise Israel’s actions in Gaza and call for changes to the structure of the United Nations Security Council.
Qatar, Türkiye and other Arab and Muslim countries have also raised concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
In a joint statement, the countries called for humanitarian assistance to reach Palestinians and urged Israel to facilitate the delivery of aid.
Middle East Crisis Dominates UNGA
The UNGA Middle East crisis has remained a major focus of discussions as leaders debate the conflicts involving Iran and Israel.
The UNGA Middle East crisis has also intensified calls for diplomatic solutions, particularly over Gaza, regional security and access through the Strait of Hormuz.
With discussions continuing in New York, attention remains on whether diplomatic efforts can ease tensions across the region.
