Protect yourself, no friends in music industry – Artiste warns

A music artiste, Ogbemudia Aganmwonyi, aka Spykida, has described the Nigerian music industry as a space where there are no friends but people who only look out for themselves.

Spykida, a graduate of sociology and anthropology from the Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, Edo State spoke during an interview with Midweek Exclusive.

He explained that for an artiste to survive in the music industry he or she must realise that asides from being talented, there would be a need to understand the business of making music.

Spykida said, “I worked with Mohbad on the song “Peace” which was one of the biggest songs last year and has already gone platinum in Nigeria, having garnered over 14 million on-demand streams. I also produced Raybekah’s ‘Gimme Vibe’, which got a sync licence in an Amazon series, ‘Harlem on Prime.’

“I worked on Ti Blaze’s last album by producing track 10 featuring Camidoh from Ghana, and I have worked with artists like OV from Ghana, Bosom Pyung, Odumodublvck, Teni, Mojo, Soft, Hotyce, Zilla Oaks, psycho YP. In doing so, I have learnt that there is no friend in the industry, you have to learn the business, get a lawyer and protect yourself and your intellectual property.”

Asked about his future projection, Spykida said in five to 10 years, he sees himself as a well-known music executive, adding, “I have been doing some A&R for a few artistes and myself and it has been going crazy. I have a team, SN4L, with producers and artistes already and we are coming.”
