Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested 19 suspected pipeline vandals during an intelligence-led operation in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State.
One of the suspects reportedly claimed to be a serving police sergeant but could not produce an identity card when soldiers apprehended him.
The operation involved troops from the 143 Rangers Battalion, Ovim, under the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade Headquarters.
The suspects were arrested along the Nkwonta axis of Isuikwuato after security personnel reportedly spent about three months gathering intelligence, conducting surveillance and planning the operation.
Soldiers Catch Suspects Loading Pipeline Materials
According to reports, soldiers apprehended the suspects while they were allegedly attempting to load underground pipeline materials onto a heavy-duty trailer.
Sources at the 14 Brigade Headquarters in Ohafia said the operation demonstrated the importance of intelligence gathering, surveillance and careful planning in tackling criminal activities.
The military said the operation also reflected its commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and preventing the destruction or theft of public and private property.
Suspects Handed Over to NSCDC
The 19 suspects were subsequently transferred to the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Their arrest comes amid growing concerns over the destruction and theft of public assets in Isuikwuato.
The Executive Mayor of the local government area, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke, had previously raised concerns about vandalism and the loss of valuable public infrastructure.
The latest operation forms part of wider security efforts to protect critical infrastructure and discourage activities that threaten public assets and economic interests.
