Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to pray for political leaders, including himself, to change their ways and stop misappropriating public funds.
Obi made the appeal while speaking to worshippers at Joshua Selman’s Koinonia Fellowship at Chida Hotel in Jabi, Abuja, on Sunday.
The former Anambra State governor said politicians and political leadership were responsible for many of the challenges facing Nigeria, arguing that the country itself had the resources and potential to prosper.
“We politicians are the problem of this country. There is nothing wrong with Nigeria,” Obi said.
“What is wrong in Nigeria is the politicians, the leadership God created in this country. That’s all. Let God touch our hearts to use public money for public good. Always remember us in your prayers.”
Obi said Nigerians were facing hardship because resources that could be used to improve the lives of people living in poverty were, in his view, being diverted by political leaders.
He urged worshippers not to limit their prayers to particular politicians but to pray for all political leaders, including himself.
“Let God touch us to stop stealing. That’s why people are suffering. Remember us in your prayers,” he said.
“Don’t say one is good and the other one is bad. All of us. Remember us all in your prayers.”
Obi’s comments come amid continuing public debate over governance, corruption, poverty and the management of Nigeria’s public resources.
