Top political figures from across Nigeria’s opposition landscape have assembled in Ibadan, Oyo State, for a national summit focused on strengthening collaboration and unity among rival parties.

The meeting, chaired by former president Olusegun Obasanjo and hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, is taking place at the Government House Banquet Hall. It brings together key stakeholders from parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, and New Nigeria Peoples Party.

Prominent attendees include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, all of whom confirmed their participation and expressed readiness for discussions aimed at shaping Nigeria’s political future.

Held under the theme “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy,” the summit is described by organisers as a strategic response to the country’s economic difficulties and persistent security concerns.

Several notable figures are scheduled to deliver presentations, including Chidi Odinkalu and Usman Bugaje, who will address governance and democratic sustainability. Electoral expert Mike Igini is expected to speak on credible elections, while political economist Pat Utomi will focus on economic reforms. Security analyst Kabir Adamu will examine the country’s security challenges.
Other political heavyweights, including Rotimi Amaechi and Nasiru Gawuna, were also spotted at the gathering alongside members of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress has alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress is attempting to frustrate the summit, claiming there were earlier efforts to block venue access in Abuja and disrupt the Ibadan meeting. The ruling party has yet to respond to these claims.
The summit is widely seen as a critical step toward building stronger alliances among opposition groups and positioning a united front ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
