The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged the government to strengthen emergency and traffic plans before the planned Niger Bridge demarcation.
The RS5 Zonal Commanding Officer, ACM Cyril Matthew, raised the concern during the 2026 Special Marshals Zone Conference in Awka, Anambra State.
The conference focused on improving the role of Special Marshals through partnerships and the use of data to strengthen road safety.
Niger Bridge demarcation raises safety concerns
Matthew said the FRSC was engaging the Federal Ministry of Works over the possible traffic and emergency-response challenges linked to the project.
He warned that traffic could become heavily dependent on a single bridge if another route became unavailable because of an accident or breakdown.
Such a situation, he said, could make it difficult for emergency teams and recovery operators to reach affected areas quickly.
Matthew noted that some FRSC towing equipment weighs around 70 tonnes. Such heavy equipment needs enough space to operate during recovery efforts.
FRSC seeks better emergency planning
The FRSC official said the Corps’ position was advisory and focused on ensuring safety issues were considered alongside the engineering and traffic-management plans.
He stressed the need to make adequate provisions for emergency operations as work on the Niger Bridge demarcation moves forward.
Matthew said the project had reached an advanced stage and would improve connectivity once completed.
However, he said proper planning would be important to prevent traffic disruptions and ensure emergency responders can operate effectively around the bridge.
