Former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress, weeks after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party.

Mimiko formally registered with the APC on Thursday at the party’s Ward 7 secretariat in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Speaking during the event, the former governor explained that his decision was driven by the desire to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and contribute to national development.

According to him, several policies introduced by the Tinubu-led government have shown promise, particularly in the areas of education and security reforms. He specifically praised the Federal Government’s student loan initiative, NELFUND, describing it as a major step toward improving access to education for Nigerians.

Mimiko also applauded ongoing discussions around state policing, noting that he has always supported decentralised policing as a strategy for improving security across the country.

Welcoming the former governor into the party, Ondo APC chairman, Kolawole Babatunde, described Mimiko as a committed progressive whose achievements in healthcare, education, and infrastructure remain significant.

He added that the APC views Mimiko’s defection as a “homecoming,” stressing that President Tinubu’s policies continue to attract progressive-minded politicians across the country.

Also speaking, former House of Representatives member, Joseph Akinlaja, said Mimiko’s official entry into the APC marks the complete alignment of the former governor’s political structure with the ruling party in Ondo State.

Akinlaja noted that several loyalists of Mimiko had earlier joined the APC with his approval, adding that his formal defection would strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
