After the court hearing at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Friday, Speaker Mojisola Meranda spoke to journalists about the ongoing issue with the impeached speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. Meranda clarified that a quorum in the Assembly requires more members, and Obasa’s attempt to preside over a plenary with just four lawmakers was an absurd “show of shame.” She emphasized that if Obasa was sitting with only three or four members, it amounted to nothing more than “theatre.”
Meranda acknowledged that Obasa still held a seat in the Assembly and had the right to attend. However, she strongly condemned his actions, particularly his invasion of her office, calling it completely unacceptable.
She further explained that a proper plenary could only occur when there were enough members to form a quorum. While she currently had only three or four policemen providing security, she noted that her usual protection included 12 policemen, four DSS officers, and two anti-bomb units, which was far greater than the present security arrangement.
Meranda also shared that the party leadership was actively addressing the ongoing speaker dispute. She reassured the public, saying, “We are consulting with our leaders, and all proper steps will be taken at the appropriate time. We remain committed to our party and the people of Lagos.”
In closing, she reaffirmed Obasa’s right to attend the Assembly, as he was still a member, but stressed that the invasion of her office crossed a significant line. She called on all involved parties to let the legal teams handle the matter, stating, “We are still committed to our leadership and to serving the people of Lagos State. That is what matters most.”
