Makinde, who was re-elected in 2023 and is ineligible for another term, has previously stated that he intends to influence the selection of his successor. In October 2024, while receiving a report on public service reforms, he declared that he would play a significant role in determining who becomes the next governor, particularly within the PDP. The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has now confirmed that he will announce his preferred successor in January 2026.
Makinde made this announcement on Monday during the 11th Omituntun Ramadan lecture at the Government House Arcade in Ibadan, the state capital. Speaking in Yoruba, he expressed his gratitude to Muslim leaders for their support and urged them to continue praying for his administration.
“Political activities will begin in January 2026, and at that time, I will reveal the individual who will take over from me,” Makinde said. He also humorously addressed socialite Abbas Oloko, asking him not to take down his billboard at Isale Alfa, as the image of his chosen successor would be displayed there in January 2026.
“I may not have my way, as it will ultimately be up to the people of Oyo State, but I will still have a say, especially within the PDP, as I continue to hold influence over the party structure,” Makinde added. “Those who are campaigning to become the next governor will have to wait because I still have until May 29, 2027, and I will also have a say in who succeeds me.”
