Presidency favours return of Obasa official claims

The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to hold a crucial emergency meeting over the lingering leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The high-stakes meeting is scheduled to take place at Lagos House, Marina, the official residence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The GAC, recognized as the apex decision-making body of the APC in Lagos, has its decisions binding on party members. It is chaired by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, with President Bola Tinubu serving as its lifetime patron.

This development follows a similar GAC meeting held two weeks ago at the same venue, addressing the ongoing leadership turmoil in the state legislature. Concurrently, Governor Sanwo-Olu is expected to preside over the weekly Monday Executive Council meeting, where the crisis in the House of Assembly is also anticipated to be a key discussion point in search of an amicable resolution.

The crisis was triggered by the removal of former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on January 13, 2025, by 32 out of 40 Assembly members in absentia. His removal stemmed from allegations of financial misappropriation, misconduct, and high-handedness.

Following his ousting, his former deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was installed as the new substantive Speaker.

However, this move has generated conflicting reactions among GAC members, party faithful, and the general public, further deepening divisions within the council.

Several GAC members have openly disagreed on the manner of Obasa’s removal. Muraina Taiwo, a GAC member from Isolo Constituency, recently criticized the Assembly’s decision to reconvene during recess to remove Obasa. Similarly, two prominent GAC members, Musiliu Obanikoro and Senator Anthony Adefuye, have expressed opposing views on the issue. While Adefuye described Obasa’s removal as illegal, Obanikoro dismissed his stance, calling it “careless.”

With tensions running high, reports indicate that GAC has now moved to broker a peaceful resolution to the imbroglio. Today’s meeting is expected to play a crucial role in determining the path forward for the Lagos State House of Assembly and the APC leadership in the state.
